Foundation Q&A

In 1981, the Kappa Delta Foundation was created when the late Dorothea Cavin (Alpha Psi-Drury) left Kappa Delta the largest single bequest it had ever received. Since that time, the foundation has supported Kappa Delta’s mission to build confident sisters and inspire them to action.

  • How are the sorority and foundation different?

The foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation, while Kappa Delta Sorority is a 501(c)(7) corporation. As a 501(c)(3), your gifts to the foundation are tax-deductible. While the sorority offers the member experience we all know and love, the foundation provides a way to enhance your member experience. We offer undergraduate and graduate scholarships to support sisters in their academic endeavors. We also fund speakers for various events such as National Convention, leadership training for LDCs, and more!

The Kappa Delta experience looks different than it did even a few decades ago. Tuition has more than doubled in the last 30 years, even when adjusting for inflation, and a sister would have to work a full-time, minimum wage job for almost the entire calendar year to afford just one year of tuition and nothing else. The changing landscape of our college campuses means that the needs of our sisters are changing too. Donations to the foundation allow Kappa Delta to continue to meet the needs of our sisters, whether through scholarships, leadership training, or other support.

Members from @kappadeltaETSU had the opportunity to attend UIFI, a @teamaflv nationwide fraternity and sorority leadership retreat this summer thanks to a foundation grant. Here`s what they had to say:

“Attending UIFI was a transformative experience for us. We were able to step out of our comfort zones to advocate for change within our chapter and the larger community at East Tennessee State University. We learned the importance of curiosity, courage, and confidence in addressing the challenges in Greek Life. It was inspiring to connect with other Kappa Deltas from Centre College and Ripon College, sharing perspectives and ideas on common issues. Meeting so many amazing leaders from across the country has energized each of us, and we are excited to bring these insights and strategies back to our community!”
